The Story of Prophet Salih and the People of Thamud
The people of Thamud were skilled builders who carved homes into mountains. Allah sent them Prophet Salih with a clear sign—a she-camel. They killed it and were destroyed.
The People of Thamud Thamud succeeded the people of Ad. They built elaborate homes in the mountains and were proud of their civilization. They worshipped idols and rejected the message of monotheism.
The She-Camel Allah sent a miraculous she-camel as a sign for Thamud. Salih told them: "This is the she-camel of Allah; she will have a drink. And you have a drink on a known day." (11:64) — The camel would drink from the well on her day, and they on theirs. They were not to harm her.
The Crime The arrogant among them hamstrung the she-camel, killing her. They defied Salih's warning. Salih said: "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied." (11:65)
The Punishment On the third day, a mighty blast and earthquake destroyed them. They were found dead in their homes—those who had mocked the warning.
The Lesson "And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him." (11:61) — When Allah sends a clear sign and people reject it, their destruction is certain. The she-camel was a test—they failed it.
