The Story of Qarun
Qarun was from the people of Musa but oppressed them with his wealth. His story is a warning against arrogance and the love of worldly riches.
Qarun's Wealth Qarun possessed such immense wealth that the keys to his treasures would have been a burden for a group of strong men. He was given knowledge and power, but he became arrogant. He said: "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." (28:78) — He forgot that all provision comes from Allah.
The Advice Those who desired his worldly life told him: "Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like those who exult. But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter." (28:76-77) — Use wealth for good; do not let it make you arrogant.
The Punishment Allah caused the earth to swallow Qarun and his home. Those who had envied him the day before now said: "Oh, how Allah extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it! If Allah had not favored us, He would have caused it to swallow us." (28:82)
The Lesson Wealth is a test. It can be a means of gratitude and charity—or a cause of arrogance and destruction. Qarun had everything except humility. His story reminds us: what we have is from Allah. Use it wisely.
