The Story of the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf)

The story of the People of the Cave is told in Surah Al-Kahf. It is a powerful narrative about faith, persecution, and Allah's protection.

The Believing Youth In a city of idol-worshippers, a group of young men believed in Allah. They faced persecution and death for their faith. They decided to flee, taking refuge in a cave. They prayed: "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." (18:10)

The Sleep Allah caused them to fall into a deep sleep. They slept for 309 years (300 solar years). Their dog lay at the entrance. Allah turned them from side to side so their bodies would not decay.

The Awakening When they awoke, they thought they had slept a day or part of a day. One went to the city to buy food—and found everything changed. The people now believed in Allah. Their coins were from a bygone era. The king came to see them. When the youth passed away, a mosque was built at the cave.

The Lesson "Do you think that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?" (18:9) — Allah protects those who flee to Him. Faith can survive the greatest trials when we trust in Allah alone.
