The Story of Luqman the Wise

Luqman is mentioned in the Quran not as a prophet but as a man endowed with wisdom. His advice to his son in Surah Luqman remains a timeless guide.

Luqman's Wisdom "We had given Luqman wisdom [saying], 'Be grateful to Allah. And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor]—indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.'" (31:12) — Gratitude benefits the one who expresses it.

His Advice to His Son Luqman counseled his son: Do not associate partners with Allah—the gravest sin. Be good to parents—especially in their old age. Establish prayer, enjoin good, forbid evil. Do not turn your cheek in arrogance or walk proudly. Lower your voice—the harshest of sounds is the braying of donkeys.

The Essence "Indeed, the worst of sounds is the voice of donkeys." (31:19) — Even in practical advice, Luqman pointed to spiritual refinement. Arrogance, loudness, and ingratitude are unbecoming of a believer.

The Lesson Luqman's wisdom was a gift from Allah. He used it to guide his son—and through the Quran, to guide all of us. Wisdom is not merely knowledge; it is applying truth with humility and gratitude.
