The Quran and Modern Science
The Quran, revealed over 1,400 years ago, contains numerous references that align with modern scientific discoveries—a fact that continues to inspire believers and intrigue scholars.
The Expanding Universe "And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:47) — This verse, revealed centuries before the Big Bang theory, speaks of Allah expanding the universe. Modern cosmology confirms that the universe is indeed expanding.
The Origin of Life in Water "And We made from water every living thing." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30) — Scientists recognize water as essential for life. All known life forms depend on water. The Quran's declaration of water as the basis of life resonates with modern biology.
Embryonic Development The Quran describes stages of human development in the womb in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:12-14). The descriptions of the embryo as a clot, then a chewed lump, then bones clothed with flesh, correspond remarkably to stages identified by modern embryology.
Mountains as Stabilizers "And He has placed on the earth firm mountains, lest it should shake with you." (Surah An-Nahl 16:15) — Geology describes how mountains have deep roots that stabilize the Earth's crust, acting like pegs—a concept echoed in the Quran.
A Note on Approach While such correlations strengthen faith for many, the primary purpose of the Quran is guidance, not a science textbook. Muslims believe the Quran is the word of Allah—and its harmony with creation is a sign of its divine origin.
