Patience (Sabr) in the Quran

Patience (Sabr) is one of the most frequently mentioned virtues in the Quran. It is the key to success in this life and the next.

Allah is With the Patient "O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153) — When we face difficulty, Allah reminds us that patience and prayer are our greatest tools, and He is with those who persevere.

The Promise of Good "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." (Surah Az-Zumar 39:10) — The reward for patience is beyond measure. Allah will compensate the patient in ways we cannot imagine.

Stories of Patience The Quran recounts the stories of Prophet Ayub (Job), who remained patient through severe illness and loss; Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), who endured betrayal and imprisonment; and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who faced persecution with patience. These narratives inspire us to endure our own trials.

Types of Patience Scholars identify three types: patience in obeying Allah (doing what we must), patience in avoiding sin (refraining from what we must not), and patience in trials (accepting what Allah decrees). Each type brings its own reward.

A Quality of the Believers "By time! Indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." (Surah Al-Asr 103:1-3) — Patience is listed among the qualities that save us from loss. It is not passive waiting—it is active perseverance with trust in Allah.

When trials come, remember: Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Patience is the bridge between hardship and ease.
