Hajj: The Pilgrimage and How to Perform It
Hajj (الحج) is the pilgrimage to the House of Allah—the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) and the Kaaba in Mecca. It is the fifth pillar of Islam and is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "An accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise."
Quranic Foundation
"And pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all people who are able to undertake it." (Surah Aal Imran 3:97)
Who Must Perform Hajj Hajj is obligatory for every adult Muslim who: - Is sane and has reached puberty - Is physically able to travel and perform the rites - Has sufficient funds for the journey and to support dependents during absence - Has a safe route to Mecca
When Hajj Is Performed Hajj takes place in the month of Dhul Hijjah, specifically from the 8th to the 12th (or 13th). The main rites occur on fixed days; missing the standing at Arafat on the 9th invalidates that year's Hajj.
Types of Hajj - Tamattu' — Umrah first (during Hajj months), then Hajj. Most common; involves releasing ihram between Umrah and Hajj. - Qiran — Umrah and Hajj combined in one ihram. - Ifrad — Hajj only, without Umrah.
How to Perform Hajj (Step-by-Step)
Before Hajj: Enter Ihram At the miqat (designated boundary—e.g., Dhul Hulayfah for those from Medina), perform ghusl, pray two rak'ahs, and declare the intention (niyyah) for Hajj. Men wear two white unstitched cloths; women wear modest dress. Recite the Talbiyah:
Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak. "Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and bounty are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner."
Day 1 — 8 Dhul Hijjah - Enter ihram (if not already in it) and recite the Talbiyah. - Travel to Mina and spend the day and night there. - Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr (each at its time, shortened but not combined).
Day 2 — 9 Dhul Hijjah (Day of Arafat) - After Fajr, leave Mina for Arafat. - Stay in Arafat from midday (after Dhuhr) until sunset. This standing (wuquf) is the most essential rite—the Prophet said: "Hajj is Arafat." - Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined (qasar) at Dhuhr time. - Make abundant dua and dhikr. - After sunset, leave for Muzdalifah. - Pray Maghrib and Isha combined at Isha time. - Spend the night in Muzdalifah and collect pebbles for stoning (about 70 for the following days).
Day 3 — 10 Dhul Hijjah (Eid Day) - Before sunrise, leave Muzdalifah for Mina. - Stone Jamarat al-Aqaba (the largest pillar) with seven pebbles, saying "Allahu akbar" with each throw. - Perform the sacrifice (slaughter a sheep, goat, or share in a camel). This is obligatory for Tamattu' and Qiran. - Men: shave the head (halq) or clip the hair (taqsir). Women clip a small amount. - Remove ihram—all restrictions are lifted except marital relations. - Go to Mecca, perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (circumambulation of the Kaaba seven times) and Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah seven times). - Return to Mina and spend the night.
Days 4 & 5 — 11th and 12th Dhul Hijjah - After Dhuhr, stone all three Jamarat (small, medium, large), seven pebbles each, in order. - Leave Mina before sunset on the 12th (or stay and stone on the 13th as well).
Before Leaving Mecca - Perform Tawaf al-Wida (farewell tawaf)—the final circumambulation before departing. This is wajib; omitting it requires a sacrifice.
