Gratitude (Shukr) in the Quran

Gratitude (Shukr) is a central theme in the Quran. Allah repeatedly reminds us to be thankful and promises to increase His favors upon those who are grateful.

Allah Loves the Grateful "And when your Lord proclaimed: If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]." (Surah Ibrahim 14:7) — Gratitude is not merely good manners; it is a spiritual practice that attracts more blessings from Allah.

Few Are Truly Grateful The Quran often observes that most people are ungrateful. "And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful." (Surah Ibrahim 14:34) — Recognizing this tendency helps us strive to be among the grateful few.

Gratitude in Worship The very purpose of creation is gratitude. "It is He who made the sun and moon for your reckoning... that you may know the number of years and count [time]. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing." The natural world itself is a sign inviting us to gratitude.

Thankfulness in Hardship True gratitude includes thanking Allah in times of ease and trusting Him in times of difficulty. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer! His affair is always good. If something good happens to him, he is thankful, and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him."

Count your blessings, express thanks in prayer, and remember: every breath is a gift.
