The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five pillars—the essential acts of worship that every Muslim must fulfill. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Islam has been built upon five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying the zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting the month of Ramadan."

1. Shahada (الشهادة) — Declaration of Faith

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." This is the key to Islam—whoever says it with conviction enters the fold of Islam. It affirms Allah's oneness (Tawheed) and acceptance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final messenger.

2. Salah (الصلاة) — The Five Daily Prayers Establishing the five daily prayers at their appointed times. Prayer is the pillar of the religion—it connects the believer to Allah throughout the day and structures life around remembrance of the Creator. The five prayers are Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.

3. Zakat (الزكاة) — Obligatory Charity Paying 2.5% of one's wealth (above the nisab threshold) annually to those in need. Zakat purifies wealth, supports the poor, and fosters social solidarity. It is due on gold, silver, cash, and certain trade goods held for a full lunar year.

4. Sawm (الصوم) — Fasting in Ramadan Fasting from dawn until sunset during the month of Ramadan. Muslims abstain from food, drink, and marital relations. Fasting cultivates self-discipline, gratitude, and empathy for the needy. It is one of the greatest acts of worship.

5. Hajj (الحج) — Pilgrimage to Mecca Making the pilgrimage to the House of Allah (the Kaaba) in Mecca at least once in a lifetime—for those who are physically and financially able. Hajj is performed in the month of Dhul Hijjah and includes specific rites: ihram, tawaf, sa'i, standing at Arafat, and the sacrifice. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "An accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise."
