Dua When Waking Up

The first words a Muslim should say upon waking are praise and gratitude to Allah for restoring life after sleep. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught specific duas for this moment.

Alhamdulillah

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

"All praise is due to Allah, who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection." This acknowledges that sleep is a form of death and that Allah alone restores life.

Morning Remembrance The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says upon waking: 'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulk wa lahul hamd, wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir' (There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent)—and then says 'Subhanallah' and 'Alhamdulillah'—his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea."

Rubbing the Face Upon waking, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would rub the sleep from his face with his hands and then recite the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran. This combines physical awakening with spiritual awakening.

Starting the Day Right Beginning the day with dhikr sets the tone for the hours ahead. It reminds us of our purpose and keeps our hearts connected to Allah from the first moment we open our eyes.
