Dua for Parents
The Quran and Sunnah emphasize honoring parents and making dua for them. Here are the most beloved duas for our mothers and fathers.
Rabbana Dua for Parents
"Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." (Surah Ibrahim 14:41) Ibrahim made this dua. We can do the same.
Dua for Mercy
"My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." (Surah Al-Isra 17:24) This is the Quranic command—to pray for our parents with the same tenderness they showed us in childhood.
When They Are Alive Make dua for them in every prayer, especially in prostration. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the closest a servant is to Allah is when they are in prostration—so increase in supplication there.
When They Have Passed Continue making dua for them. Give charity on their behalf, perform Hajj or Umrah for them, and recite Quran for them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, their deeds cease except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits, or a righteous child who prays for them."
