Dua Before and After Eating

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught duas to recite before and after eating. These bring barakah (blessing) to the food and gratitude for the provision.

Before Eating

"In the name of Allah." Or the longer form:

"In the name of Allah and upon the blessing of Allah." If one forgets to say Bismillah at the start, they should say:

"In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end."

After Eating

"All praise is due to Allah who has fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power from myself." This acknowledges that all provision is from Allah.

Shorter After-Meal Dua

"All praise is due to Allah, praise that is abundant, pure, and blessed." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said this fills the scale of good deeds.

Manners Eat with the right hand, from what is nearest to you, and do not criticize the food. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never criticized food—if he liked it he ate it, if not he left it.
